Machu Picchu-Huayna Picchu
We have all seen the distinctive shape of the great mountain that has made Machu Picchu a worldwide icon.
But few have climbed the steep slopes of Huayna Picchu.
The route is very steep and narrow. It includes several sections with steps and staircases carved into living rock and supported by cables. It carries some risk, so if you are not in good physical shape or have a fear of heights, we advise you not to undertake it. The ascent varies between 45 minutes and 2 hours, depending on each person’s physical fitness. You climb about 300 m above the citadel of Machu Picchu, which sits at 2,400 m; this ‘young peak’ reaches an altitude of 2,700 m.

Thus, Huayna Picchu is the smaller mountain and the larger mountain is Machu Picchu (its summit is 800 m above the citadel, or 3,200 m), which gives its name to the valley and the citadel.
